It seems we are hearing about more and more slip and fall accidents in businesses and commercial facilities lately. For a small business, a slip and fall lawsuit could mean having to close the business. If you are a business owner, avoiding slip and fall accidents and injuries should be at the forefront of your mind. Not just to avoid lawsuits, but to protect your employees and anyone who comes into your facility from injury. Let’s take a look at four things you can do as a business owner to give your employees a safe working environment and your customers a safe, worry-free place to shop or visit.
1. Mats: You should always have entryway mats on both sides of every outside door. This will allow those entering a place to wipe their feet before entering the building. The entrance of a building is a common place for people to fall. Walking on wet concrete is not that big of a deal, but once that person walks on to tile or another hard surface, the bottoms of their wet shoes can quickly lose traction. Entryway mats can help eliminate that danger. If it is a particularly wet day, mats throughout the store can help even more.
2. Audit: Have your building’s floor checked out by a professional who can quickly point out the dangers and liabilities of the location. You may need new flooring, more mats or changes to help make your facility a safer place.
3. Clean up: Be sure to respond to spills quickly. It only takes a second for someone to slip and fall. Have someone check throughout the facility regularly to check for danger zones. If people are tracking in water on a rainy day, make sure your mats are placed correctly and that they are not water logged.
4. Use signs: Make sure you have signs available to alert patrons and employees of wet floors. Do your best to dry the floors, but leave the signs until you are positive they are no longer wet.
